Hometown Hero: Jonathan Falk

My name is Susan Falk and I have been with Mia Bella for several months now. I believe that my son, Staff Sergeant Jonathan Falk, should be considered for your next hometown hero.

Jonathan is in the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army, Unit 506. He is currently serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. He was in Mosul, Iraq in the winter and spring of 2003 and left for Ramadi, Iraq this past November.

Jonathan has a wife, Karyn, and three sons, Dominick (age 2) and twins, Damien and Derrick who turned one in January. Karyn is staying here in Pittsburgh to be with family, while Jonathan is deployed. Jonathan has been in the Army for six years and is a decorated soldier. He has earned his CIB (Combat Infantry Badge), Air Assault Wings, and EIB (Earned Infantry Badge).

I do not know how my son found the strength to leave his beautiful family for this second tour of duty, but as soldiers do, he found a way. Ramadi is a very difficult part of Iraq in which to represent the United States. It is a hostile area and we pray daily for Jonathan’s safe return. We are hoping he will be home for next Christmas, but nothing is certain. He has already missed so many special occasions in the life of his family and we’re hoping a third Christmas away from home won’t be added to the list.

Jonathan is truly a hometown hero. I am attaching photographs of my son, his wife, and three sons. In a separate email, I will send a newspaper article
written when he earned his EIB and a copy of a blog, written by a newspaper reporter, who was one of three reporters who spent time with my son’s unit, going out on missions this past April. This reporter confirms my belief that my son is heroic in his efforts during this difficult time for our country. I confess to having had difficulty reading about my son’s activities, yet was very proud of him.

Recently Jonathan has requested our church congregation to send matchbox cars, new or used, that he can carry in his pockets to give to the children of Iraq. He has watched them struggling to find things to play with on the streets and even in the trash and being a father himself, wished he would have things to give them. He can carry 7-10 small cars in his pockets and be able to give one to each child he meets along his way. Our church and places of employment have come through and Jonathan has been sent several boxes full of cars. I am extremely proud of my son and the choice he has made to serve his country. He has honored all of us in the dignified and dedicated way he goes about his duties as a soldier. You would be making a good choice to select him as a hometown hero. I know that I have attached a lot of reading material for a busy man, but feel confident that if you take the
time to read through it, you will agree that Jonathan is a hero.
